About This Project

Saving a century of character

This Surry Hills terrace featured beautifully detailed Edwardian-era decorative plaster on its bedroom walls — ornate swag mouldings with a draped beaded rope motif and bow detailing, typical of the finely decorated interiors that distinguished higher-end terraces of the period. Over time, building movement had introduced significant cracking throughout the plaster, with multiple fractures running across and around the decorative elements.

Work like this requires care on two fronts: the structural repair must be done correctly so the cracks don't simply re-open, and the decorative elements must be protected and preserved throughout. Cracks are chased out, filled with appropriate heritage-compatible materials, and brought back flush — a process that needs patience to do properly without disturbing the surrounding mouldings or original plaster surface.

The swag mouldings themselves are an irreplaceable part of the home's character. Where sections had lifted or broken away, these were carefully re-adhered and made good — ensuring that when the walls are redecorated, the full original decorative scheme reads as it would have when the house was built.
