Bringing a Victorian masterpiece back to life
This Paddington home featured a stunning Victorian-era decorative plaster ceiling — an intricate grid of raised relief panels filled with elaborate floral and foliage motifs, framed by ornate period cornicing. Years of movement and water damage had left a significant hole punched through one of the central panels, disrupting what is a genuinely remarkable piece of craftsmanship.
Restoring decorative relief work of this complexity demands patience and a deep familiarity with traditional plastering techniques. The damaged section required careful removal and build-up, matching the surrounding relief profile by hand. Every leaf, petal, and border had to flow seamlessly into the existing moulding — the kind of work that becomes invisible when done well.
The finished ceiling now looks exactly as it was intended — a cohesive, richly detailed surface that sets the tone for the whole room. The restored plasterwork sits beneath a crystal chandelier that shows off every detail of the relief work, a combination that makes the result particularly rewarding to see.

Before, During & After
A large hole punched through one of the central relief panels — damage caused by water ingress and structural movement over many decades.
Hand-matching the intricate relief profile — each section of the floral motifs carefully built up to blend with the surrounding original plasterwork.
The ceiling fully restored — relief panels intact across the entire surface, period cornicing preserved, and a finish that looks as it would have when first installed.
