Repair of a damaged decorative plaster ceiling panel in a residential property — restoring an ornate Victorian-era relief design to a finish indistinguishable from the original.

Bringing an ornate ceiling back to life

This residential property in Dulwich featured a striking decorative plaster ceiling — a Victorian-era design with repeating ornate relief panels, intricate scrollwork and botanical motifs set within a grid of moulded borders. A section of one panel had sustained significant damage, leaving a large hole that cut through the fine detailing.

The challenge with work like this lies in the precise matching of relief depth, texture, and profile. Ornate decorative plaster panels each have subtle variations in the way motifs are laid out, and any repair that doesn't account for this reads as obviously patched. Our approach was to carefully rebuild the damaged area in layers, using traditional plaster techniques to recreate the original relief by hand.

The result is a seamless restoration — the repaired section sits flush with the surrounding panels, with the pattern flowing continuously across the repair boundary as though the damage never occurred. The finished ceiling is ready to paint, with no visible trace of the original hole.
